Stevens College, a college of excellence set in Gateshead, is committed to giving you all the support to achieve accreditation in the course of your choice. We offer a variety of courses including certificate and diplomas in Accounting, Hospitality and Tourism management. Lectures by the experienced staff are backed up by a well stocked library and access to the internet to further your study. Small classes sizes ensure that you get individual attention from your teachers whenever necessary and mean that continual assessment can be made of your progress.
Stevens College has a vibrant environment to assist you in interacting with your fellow students and developing alternative skills. We also have a canteen and a student common room where you can take a well earned break.
Good attendance and punctuality are vital to success. Missed lectures create gaps in your knowledge which are very difficult to fill. We will monitor both and encourage you to maintain a high standard. It is equally important to engage in independent study and research on a regular basis during your course of study in order to realise your potential. Student Welfare Director is available for consultation throughout the year. The college is well placed for access to public libraries and leisure centres. It is very near to the centre of Newcastle where you can enjoy seeing the sights of this great capital city and immerse yourself in its culture.
Great place to live, fantastic place to Study!
Newcastle is the regional capital of the North East and renowned as one of the best cities for students in the UK. A vibrant student population and a warm and friendly atmosphere make it popular with students from far and wide.
A cosmopolitan city...
Newcastle is a great place to socialise with an excellent choice from literally hundreds of quality restaurants and cafes catering for every taste. From Chinese banquets to a quick snack for lunch, or just a coffee and muffin with friends at one of the many street cafes where you can sit and watch the world go by. The choice is yours!
A party city...
Newcastle has a full programme of entertainment and events throughout the year: street parties on our famous Quayside at Christmas and New Year; the Hoppings (Europe's largest travelling fair!); music, comedy, dance, film, and Chinese and Irish festivals throughout the year, it seems there's always something going on!
A city for shopping...
Whether looking for clothes, music, electrical goods, sports gear or just browsing then Newcastle has a shop for you! The College is within easy walking distance of Eldon Square and Monument Mall and the Metro Centre (one of the largest shopping malls in Europe) is only a short journey away. Your NUS card will entitle you to discounts in many clothing shops such as Top Shop and Pilot and also record stores like HMV and Virgin Megastore. Also - not to be missed - is the Quayside street market held every Sunday. If you're looking for a bargain there are over 200 stalls selling clothes, cds, records, books and more.
A city for sport...
Sport is important in our city and we are the home to top teams such as Premiership football club Newcastle United, Newcastle Falcons Rugby Club, and Newcastle Eagles Basketball Club all regularly entertaining thousands of adoring fans.
The city also hosts the Great North Run - Europe's largest participation half-marathon.
...at the heart of a great region
A small journey out of Newcastle in any direction and you are in an area rich in beauty and heritage. You can visit castles and long golden beaches, breathtaking countryside and a landscape largely unspoilt. The North East is alive with history - the legacy of the Roman Empire at Hadrian's Wall; early English Christianity at Lindisfarne and the beginnings of the industrial revolution.
Newcastle residents – known as Geordies – enjoy a reputation for being amongst the friendliest and welcoming people in the UK. About 42,000 students live in Newcastle, which makes it a vibrant, youthful and modern city, known for its culture, sport, nightlife and entertainment. International students add to the city’s cosmopolitan feel; from the bustle of Chinatown in the city centre to the specialty shops and Halal supermarkets of the West End, you’ll be able to find the comforts of home while living in a modern British city. Many parts of the city centre are made up of buildings listed for their historical and architectural significance. The Castle Keep dates back to 1168 and the reign of King Henry II, and the Theatre Royal on Grey Street is host to the Royal Shakespeare Company every year. Gateshead and its neighbour Newcastle are also famed for some striking modern buildings. The Millennium Bridge spans the River Tyne joining Newcastle and Gateshead, and the Sage Gateshead, designed by Sir Norman Foster, is an outstanding acility for all types of live music and a pioneering centre for music education.
Accommodation
The College can arrange, on request, accommodation for its students. Initially, the college can reserve accommodation with a host family within reasonable traveling distance. For accommodation to be arranged by the college, students must let the College have a completed accommodation reservation form with one month's rent deposit at least four weeks before accommodation is required:
Other expenses (cleaning charges, utility bills etc.) approximately £40 - £50/week may be added to the above rates.
Students requiring accommodation services have to deposit one month’s rent with the college in advance. The deposit is refundable when the student leaves the accommodation.
A student may, however, decide to stay with friends or relatives or rent somewhere to live in. At present the average price of renting a room in a shared house in this area is £70 - 80 per week. The students may also have to pay something extra towards electricity, gas, phone bills etc. Most private landlords will ask for one month's rent in advance and may also ask for a month's deposit to cover any damages.
Students will need money to survive on a daily basis. They will need to have warm clothing in the winter, buy food and toiletries, pay for transport, and any extras. An average guide to living cost would be a minimum of £40 - £50 weekly.
Photocopying & Printing Facilities
Students may avail themselves of the photocopying facilities provided by the College at nominal charge. Students are permitted to print necessary documents and study materials free up to 200 pages per year. But additional pages are also allowed to be printed by a nominal charge.
Library Facilities
The College Library stocks books recommended on the Departmental book lists. Students are allowed to use the library whenever they wish to study. Local libraries are within easy reach of the college. The Stevens College library provides all texts, further readings and up to date editions of all basic books. We also provide academic journals for advanced research in relevant field. Students can borrow two text books at a time for up to one week
